Abstract
No accurate account has yet been provided of the development of the scripts for Granada Television's 1981 adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's novel, Brideshead Revisited. Some accounts credit John Mortimer only, whereas others argue he had nothing to do with the final script. Based on extensive archival research in the UK and US, this essay offers the first detailed and accurate account of the script's genesis. In doing so, it sheds light on script-writing practices in 1970s/1980s UK television, an aspect of the industry's past which has been under researched. My essay thus makes a major contribution to Waugh studies and emerging work on script-writing and adaptation.
