Abstract
Optical LAN technologies permit end stations to access the network via a high capacity all-optical data path. The optical LAN protocols can be integrated into line cards in the end stations. Here, a MAC protocol for a new star-topology optical LAN employing optical switching is proposed and evaluated, with electronic edge buffering and optical switching at the central hub. Resource reservation is implemented via the exchange of control messages in advance. This work on a LAN protocol forms part of the DTI-funded project SOAPS (Smoothed Optical ATD Packet switching).
