Abstract

We have developed a novel concept providing high concentration rate sampling for detection of airborne pathogens that integrates a lightweight personal electrostatic precipitator (ESP) with an electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) droplet actuator system delivering a highly concentrated sample droplet. With this technique, tested against a range of aerosolised particles (fluorescent beads and Bacillus atrophaeus), concentration rates up to 3.9 x 10^5 min^-1 were obtained, several orders of magnitude higher than the theoretical maximum of commercial-off-the-shelf samplers. It is anticipated that ESP-EWOD system, coupled with integrated digital microfluidic bioassay platforms will help address the current limitation of bio-detection.
