Abstract

I have always found Maurer’s works intrinsically musical. At times, it feels possible to read them as graphic scores. But to respond in such an analogous way feels naïve and unrequired, as the works exist in totality without the need for additional senses.

My response to her work offers a distorted play with time, with ambient sound filling the space using traces of Maurer’s own voice, and overlapping pulses representing the 2-D planes whose proportion changes with the viewing angle.

‘Time drives a wedge between two things touching each other, and pries them apart.’ [Maurer 2020]
