AI Matters Chatbot Integration in Holistic STEM Education

Research output: Book/ReportBook

Abstract

This book advocates for an ethical adoption of AI-driven chatbots in academia and research within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), envisioning a future educational landscape shaped by artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) to cater to individual student needs. Education is transcending traditional classrooms, compelling institutions to embrace AI-driven methods for interactive learning experiences. Such integration will equip learners with practical skills for modern professions. The anticipated educational evolution will progressively incorporate AI tools into everyday appliances and gadgets. The field of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEd) is rapidly evolving, with a primary goal of enhancing student learning through the implementation of ethical AI-based solutions. However, some vulnerable learners may resort to cheating in education and training using AI chatbots for various reasons, including a desire for shortcuts, pressure to achieve high grades, or lack of engagement with the learning material. Restricting chatbots is not an effective way to prevent academic offenses. To support learning, it's crucial to foster an environment that emphasizes understanding over grades, encouraging a growth mindset where mistakes are seen as opportunities for learning rather than failures. The book explores the transformative role of AI in STEM education and research, guiding readers through its integration with chatbots in academic domains.

Emphasizing inclusion, it connects STEM and non-STEM disciplines, evolving integrated-STEM methodology into holistic STEM. Each chapter provides lists of published resources, facilitating exploration in developing authentic reviews and encouraging individual and group projects with minimal human supervision. Without delving into pedagogical and detailed technical intricacies or prescribing AI and Chatbots for specific frameworks, the book recognizes their broad applications. Integrating diverse frameworks can give rise to new disciplines, showcasing the adaptability of AI and chatbots to support interconnected or hybrid frameworks across various domains. This greater integration enhances efficiency, decision-making, and communication, fostering a holistic approach for comprehensive understanding and contributing to innovative solutions impacting industries, economies, and societies.

Book content The first two chapters provide a comprehensive guide to the dynamic world of STEM and explore the AI links to realize a Holistic STEM framework, further delving into integrated frameworks leading to micro-management techniques. It exclusively identifies AI resources for kids’ GPT to learn STEM and non-STEM subjects and for serious academic research, including analytical tools to automatically summarise multiple tasks and establish facts and develop relationships among simulated parameters. Chapter 3 delves deeply into transformative perspectives on chatbots in education and research, showcasing their multifaceted role in STEM. This chapter offers 50 academic applications of chatbots that can be harnessed academically, including addressing 24/7 accessibility, personalized learning, and adaptive curriculum, among many others. Leveraging AI-chatbot collaboration, online tools, and basic STEM skills, the book offers optimised outcomes for sustainable businesses. Chapter 4 deals with harnessing options for the AI dealing with education, health, and business innovation. It identifies academic implications of AI with educational institutions for students’ learning demanding responsible harnessing AI in assessments, ensuring that technology enhances the learning experience while maintaining academic rigor and integrity. Practical appendices feature some examples of chatbot-generated coursework, and exam solutions, demonstrating ChatGPT’s capabilities to assessors, and encouraging academics to develop alternative assessment methodologies combating academic misconduct. This demands bridging the gap between STEM academics and learning technologists. The appendices also provide a few samples of short E&T projects that help students develop their hands-on training and CPDs. These elements make it a valuable resource for educators, students, and STEM enthusiasts seeking hands-on experiences and innovative projects. Visualizing AI potential, chapters’ images were generated using the free AI tool DALL·E 3, crediting Microsoft® Bing as the image creator. It is widely accepted to use Chatbots or other software for language editing purposes without undermining any copyrights or incurring ethical issues when preparing research articles for better readability, especially for an international audience. Therefore, the English language in this book has been enhanced using ChatGPT and Grammarly. Join this exploration into a future where AI becomes an indispensable companion in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation in holistic-STEM fields. Currently, its available in Print version but an online version is available as eBook as Free Online.
