Abstract
This is the output of a research project aimed at aligning antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on health and wellbeing, by addressing the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The study explored AMS implementation in acute care settings through three integrated phases: a systematic review of AMS strategies before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, a retrospective analysis of 640 hospital records evaluating antibiotic use in respiratory infections, and a prospective survey of 240 healthcare professionals. Key disruptions to AMS during the pandemic included reduced antibiotic reviews (81%) and delays in stewardship audits (70%). Based on these findings, an innovative Antibiotic Dashboard was developed to visualise prescribing patterns, AMS interventions, and clinical outcomes. This digital tool enables real-time data-driven decisions, promoting more effective AMS. The dashboard supports sustainable antibiotic use, helping to mitigate AMR threats and reinforcing global health security in line with the SDGs.
