Abstract

This presentation, delivered by Dr Rasha Abdelsalam Elshenawy, provides a concise and clinically relevant introduction to antimicrobial pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) for doctors and healthcare professionals. It covers the principles of drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, and explains how these parameters—such as clearance, volume of distribution, elimination rate constant, and half-life—impact antimicrobial dosing. The slides address clinical applications of PK/PD in special populations including elderly patients, those with renal or hepatic impairment, and individuals with obesity. Case examples illustrate dose adjustments for aminoglycosides and renally eliminated antimicrobials, emphasising therapeutic drug monitoring and patient safety. Designed as a practical learning resource, the presentation supports antimicrobial stewardship by promoting evidence-based, optimised antibiotic use.
