Antimicrobial Stewardship Intervention Strategies

Research output: Other contribution

Abstract

Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) is an essential strategy to combat the escalating global health challenge of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is projected to cause over 10 million deaths annually by 2050. AMS involves a cohesive set of actions aimed at optimising antimicrobial use to ensure sustainable access to effective therapy for present and future generations. This presentation explores AMS strategies such as the WHO AWaRe classification for antibiotic stewardship, cascade reporting, de-escalation practices, and systematic antibiotic allergy verification. It highlights the critical role of tools like antibiograms, clinical decision support systems, and therapeutic drug monitoring in enhancing prescribing accuracy and patient safety. By focusing on education, structured interventions, and multidisciplinary collaboration, AMS programmes reduce the emergence of resistant pathogens while improving healthcare outcomes. The presentation underscores AMS as a cornerstone for safeguarding public health through innovative, evidence-based, and adaptable practices.
