BILETA Response to Department for Science, Innovation and Technology National Consultation: Growing Up in the Online World

This document presents the formal response of the British and Irish Law, Education and Technology Association (BILETA) to the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) national consultation, “Growing Up in the Online World.” Drawing upon BILETA’s collective expertise in technology law, digital policy, and education, the submission examines the regulatory and legal frameworks governing children's engagement with digital environments. The response critically evaluates current approaches to online safety, data protection, and digital literacy, offering evidence-based policy recommendations. Ultimately, it seeks to guide policymakers in balancing robust protective measures for young users with the preservation of their fundamental digital rights, freedom of expression, and access to educational technologies.
