Abstract

Experiments were conducted on socially intelligent robots based on theories of developmental psychology. This research in robotics was based on the assumption that in order to study the cognitive development of robots, the `robot in society' have to be considered, that is, using Vygotsky's approach to see social interactions as fundamental, and as a context which can scaffold the development of cognitively richer functionalities. Socially competent robots can bear the promise of showing how to bring up robots which show more and more sophisticated cognitive skills, and they might draw a picture of the robot in human society.
