Abstract
This article focuses on the transportation safety for pregnant occupants using network railway systems via computational modelling and analysis. The pregnant traveller is represented by the computational pregnant occupant model ‘Expecting’ in railway vehicle environments. ‘Expecting’ is developed at Loughborough University, UK, originally in order to investigate automotive safety by inspecting the dynamic response of the pregnant women and the multi-body fetus within the finite element uterus to crash impacts. The railway vehicles are modelled particularly to represent the critical design elements such as the seats, and tables. The suitability of railway vehicle interior designs is considered. Results such as strains occurring in the uterus during impacts are presented. This article focuses on well-being of the fetus during railway vehicle journeys. The research aims to contribute to increased safety and quality of life for pregnant women as travellers in railway vehicles.
