Abstract

The UK boasts abundant renewable energy sources, including solar, offshore and onshore wind, and biomass, alongside significant natural gas and electricity usage in industrial and domestic sectors. This paper explores the potential of a hybrid renewable energy system to power domestic and commercial needs in Redcar Township with optimal configuration. A case study analysing an energy consumption of 238.49 kWh/day informs the design of a distributed hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) featuring PV, offshore wind turbines, and battery storage simulated in Matlab/Simulink. Techno-economic optimisation using MATLAB coding and HOMER software identifies an optimal configuration with ten wind turbines, 50 solar PV panels, and ten battery units, achieving the lowest Net Present Cost (NPC) of $3.2046 million and Cost of Energy (CoE) of 0.1432 $/kWh. These findings offer valuable insights for similar projects across Europe.
