Abstract
Accidents are the fourth main reason of fatalities after heart disease, cancer and stroke. Automobile accidents constitute 49% of the overall accidents, through which many people suffer various injuries [Teng, 2008]. European Union addresses road safety as a major societal issue. In 2011, more than 30,000 people are reported to die on the roads of the European Union [European Com., 2012]. According to recent statistical data in the United States, 72% of 33,800 people killed in road vehicle accidents are occupants whereas drivers alone comprise 52% of all fatalities [U.S. Census B., 2012]. Crashworthiness and injury prevention in automobile accidents warrant further research for improved safety of the occupants.
