Abstract

Duel was commissioned by the world-leading exponent of contemporary piano performance Philip Mead with an Arts Council of England award in 2007. It has gone on to be regularly performed by Mead and other internationally acclaimed artists throughout Europe, including the prestigious Université Paris 8, France and West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge. The piano writing makes extensive use of the composer's research into English change ringing patterns and perceptual issues relating to interactivity and 'liveness' where technology is a mediating factor. Duel is an innovative composition with regards its treatments of communication issues that arise from working with acoustic and electroacoustic instruments. It places great emphasis on both parties approaching an equal partnership during performance
