Abstract

Concrete resistivity is one of the factors that control the corrosion rate of steel reinforcement bars in concrete. In chloride-induced corrosion, the presence of chloride ions and moisture in the concrete improves its ionic conductivity by allowing easy flow of ions between the corroding (anode) and noncorroding (cathode) parts of the steel bar. In this paper, the corrosion rate of steel bars at orthogonal edges of cracked fly ash and slag concrete beams that were exposed to 2-directional chloride ingress increased exponentially although there is no significant decrease in the concrete resistivity. It is concluded that apart from the concrete resistivity, the penetration of oxygen chloride ion from adjacent faces of the concrete element increased the availability of corrosion species thereby resulting in an increase in the steel corrosion rate.
