Abstract

A history of the italian espresso machine exploring the ways in which technical innovations in coffee brewing, environmental function within the bar setting, and messages conveyed through aesthetic styling have impacted upon the design of the machines. Article focuses on developments between 1948 and 1962 - the critical years for the emergence of the modern espresso machine.
