Abstract
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered to be one of the superior engineering materials that exhibit exceptional material properties. Carbon nanotubes are embedded in a polymer matrix to form Carbon Nanotube Reinforced Polymer (CNTRP) composites in order to attain lightweight structures with enhanced mechanical properties. Ever since their discovery, CNTs and CNT reinforced composites have been under rigorous research. In spite of this, there are variations in the literature about the exact material properties of CNTRPs. CNTs and their composites are currently forming an entirely new class of advanced materials, for which, determination of mechanical properties warrants further research.
CNTs are often classified into two main types according to the number of concentric tubes: single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT), and multi walled carbon nanotube (MWNT). Despite having been discovered first, MWNTs have not been studied as extensively as single walled counterparts. This is mainly due to the fact that SWNT offers higher strength and greater stiffness under axial deformation, and more importantly, is easier to model and investigate. On the contrary, MWNTs are known to be superior to SWNTs when subjected to bending and torsional loading4. Unlike the composites including SWNTs, there are not many studies available on the mechanical properties of MWNT reinforced polymer composites.
