Abstract

Fit, Fed and Read is a sport for development project that focuses on providing holiday programmes for primary school children (7-12 years old) who are eligible for free school meals. The focus is on providing physical activity options, a healthy meal (and healthy eating advice), in addition to supporting literacy development. The project that was evaluated for this report ran across 10 sites in Hertfordshire during four weeks of the 2019 summer holidays (on four days per week). The aims for this project were: 1. Increase knowledge & consumption of healthier foods (holiday hunger) 2. Increase physical activity levels (holiday inactivity) 3. Reduce feelings of isolation (holiday isolation) 4. Improve wellbeing and self-efficacy in young people 5. Reduce the educational attainment decline over the summer break 6. Increase families’ awareness of local provision to enhance the long-term sustainability of the proposed improved life outcomes.
