Abstract

ABSTRACT
When a newborn is born prematurely or unwell, requiring admission to a neonatal unit, there are various fundamental areas of care to address whatever dependency level they are admitted to and nursed within, be it intensive, high-dependency or special care. This chapter covers important principles of care that are relevant to all dependency levels within the neonatal unit setting specifically, namely, thermal care, blood sugar monitoring, oxygen therapy, fluid balance, feeding and nutrition, skin and wound care, infection control and care of the jaundiced neonate (Figures 8.1 to 8.12; Tables 8.1 to 8.18).
