Abstract
This chapter explores the complexities of creating equitable and inclusive
work environments in the United States and the United Kingdom today.
The chapter examines the shifting dynamics of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in organizations, including changed societal expectations and
heightened scrutiny of DEI efforts. The historical and systemic barriers
underrepresented groups face are explored along the dimensions of race
and ethnicity. The authors directly acknowledge the aspects of DEI work
that complicate the challenge: not all employees understand or support this
work. While recognizing the limits of the science and practice of DEI, the
chapter offers practical guidance that includes widening the DEI lens to
include all ethnicities, centering respect to enhance employee engagement
and innovation, reevaluating performance appraisal systems, and reconsidering how implicit bias training is used. The chapter helps leaders navigate
real-world DEI challenges to drive systemic change that benefits employees
and supports organizational success.
