Abstract

This introduction begins with the roots of iconicity and examines identifying characteristics shared by religious icons and design icons alike as functions of reception, representativeness, recognition and reverence. It then goes on to examine the words icon and iconic and the processes of iconization by which iconicity is conferred. The final part introduces the book, its approaches and its structure of thematic parts and chapters which are representative of wider issues in design discourse.
