Abstract
Explores the heritage of the pioneering work of Patrick geddes who developed the notion of the 'valley section' to explore landscape character and treat it as a basis for helping define urbanist approaches to place making. Traces the development of contemporary techniques in placemaking including that of the transect as a way of making and retrofitting urban space according to urbanism principles
