Abstract
An examination of the first stage production in 1850 of Elizabeth Gaskell's controversial industrial novel. Adapted for the audience of the Victoria Theatre, London (the `Old Vic') the article discusses the censorship imposed by the Lord Chamberlain's office and the concessions made to local, working-class theatre-goers.
