Abstract

Virtual Reality has for many years been an attractive option for simulation, prototyping and tele-operation. Today new technologies have become available, and Virtual Reality has got new momentum. A new type of VR headset has been proposed based on smartphones. This device opens new application possibilities including remote environments tele-exploration. New cameras have become available, which suit the new VR headsets. In this paper we present an assessment of panoramic views for mobile VR headsets using different types of cameras that have different costs. We present the results of this assessment and discuss the achieved performance when the generated images are observed through mobile VR headsets.
