Abstract

This co-edited anthology of essays studies the form, aesthetics and representations of LGBTQ+ identities in what can be said to be an emerging sub-genre of film and television: ‘New Queer Horror.’

This anthology proposes to build further evidence for the shifting approaches to the representation of queerness in horror film and television and via that examination also endeavours to develop a clearer understanding of the subgenre’s changing aesthetics, themes and depicted queer identities in the twenty first century. To that end, the collection is broken into four distinct sections, all of which illustrate the coexistence of more celebratory themes and identities in New Queer Horror alongside the presence of continued problematics in characters’ expressions of - and negotiations with, shame and guilt. Sections include: 21ST CENTURY QUEER HORROR FORM AND GENRE; PROBLEMATIC QUEER HORROR; QUEER PLAYGROUNDS: COMING OUT AND COMING OF AGE; QUEER SLASHERS AND COMPANY.
