Abstract

The 1980s saw the emergence of new and popular research areas in tourism, and urban tourism was no exception to this. One indication of the growing interest in this area was the proliferation of journal articles and, during the 1990s, a range of mainstream texts and edited collections of books on urban tourism. In the seminal texts on tourism, such as Mathieson and Wall (1982), urban tourism received a balanced treatment while in the burgeoning interest in the geography of tourism, Pearce (1987, 1995) discussed urban tourism and highlighted its significance for cities.
