    Abstract

This article provides some insight into the biographies of young adults undertaking a Youth Training (YT) caring course in both National Health Service (NHS) hospitals and non-NHS settings in England. The data form part of a wider ethnographic account of the personal narratives of young people on government-sponsored vocational schemes. In general, the study explores aspects of their world of work, but in particular this article looks critically at the trainees' experiences of their practical placements during their first year on the programme.
