Pocket Guide for Antibiotic Pharmacotherapy: Antibiotic Pharmacokinetics & Pharmacodynamics

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The Pocket Guide for Antibiotic Pharmacotherapy is a concise, evidence-based antibiotic handbook designed to support safe and rational antibiotic prescribing at the point of care. The book integrates core principles of antibiotic pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) with antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) frameworks to assist healthcare professionals in selecting the right antibiotic, dose, route, and duration of therapy. It addresses common infections encountered in general practice and acute-care settings, emphasising diagnostic assessment, microbiological sampling, allergy verification, review of therapy, and escalation pathways. By promoting structured decision-making and “stop-and-think” prescribing, the guide aims to improve patient safety, reduce inappropriate antibiotic use, and contribute to efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.
