N1 - After the successful pilot of Pulse, the high resolution unedited real-time audio recording of a thoraco abdominal aneurysm repair performed at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London in 2022, funding was received to enhance the impact and reach of the research. A focus group, consisting of patients and carers, surgeons, nurses, technical staff and arts therapists, will be instigated at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London with the aim of developing a research agenda that explores the effects of operation theatre sound from multiple perspectives. The group will be widened to involve the Department of Cardiology, University Hospital Zurich (USZ) with University of Lucerne with the ultimate aim of forming an international network of organisations involved in the research agenda. The focus group will work collaboratively to identify potential alternative ways of dissemination, from practice-led art to written scientific publications. Focus group team members will provide individual insights reflecting their respective roles allowing a more collaborative experience in terms of the making
and dissemination of the output.
The artistic output ‘Pulse’ has initially been piloted at UH’s Arts:Sci exhibition (June 2022) and the Research Colloquium, Applied Sciences and Arts, University of Lucerne (April 2023). It has formed part of Dr. Martinelli’s outreach activities at Bart’s and, most recently, his seminar ‘Art as a Tool for Teaching and Therapy’ Aula CIS 1, Ospedale Nuovo Santa Chiara, Pisa (May 2023). A new ambisonic version is being shown at Festival of Ideas, University of Hertfordshire May 2024.

N2 - Pulse is a high resolution unedited real-time audio recording of a thoraco abdominal aneurysm repair performed at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, May 2022. Created in collaboration with Dr. Giampaolo Martinelli, Consultant Cardiothoracic Anaesthetist, the work focuses our attention on the ambient sound - room tone and associated noise, surgical paraphernalia and human interaction - found within an operating theatre. By exploring repetition and variation, rhythm and further subdivisions of time over the micro and macro structure, it aims to demystify this largely hidden environment as it unfolds during the day.The work runs from 07.45hrs (the time the operation began) and concludes, just over eleven hours later – as it did, at the time of the procedure.
