Abstract

Recent developments in technology for quantum based repeaters have extended the range available for communicating information enabling the potential for realising quantum networks, distributed systems and a quantum based internet. Quantum repeaters employing entanglement swapping are currently reported as achieving distances in excess of 100km together with reports of direct peer to peer quantum key distribution also in excess of 100km.

In this paper we review progress being made with quantum based acyclic, causal networks and distributed systems for different space time events, consider non causal networks and explore how quantum based distributed concepts under development, contrast with current classical based distributed concepts such as scalability, performance, heterogeneity and transparency.

Research in quantum distributed systems and networks are developing the potential for applications in, for example, satellite communication, event ordering, secure communication, computation and the development of utilities as a quantum based resource.
