Abstract

Network observations of tropospheric aerosols using two-wavelength (1064nm, 532nm) backscattering lidars have been conducted currently at 22 locations in East Asia. The data from the network are used in various studies on Asian dust and regional air pollution and the atmospheric radiation. Optical characteristics of aerosols are also measured with high-spectral-resolution and Raman lidars at NIES in Tsukuba. Observations of stratospheric ozone and temperature have been performed since 1988. Variations of ozone with the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO), the 11-year solar cycle and the trend were analyzed. Development of a multi-wavelength high-spectral-resolution lidar for aerosol measurements and a tropospheric ozone lidar is being conducted for the next generation observation network.
