Abstract
The role of Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs (ASPs) in managing lower respiratory tract infections (LRTIs), including pneumonia, is critical to optimising patient outcomes and combating antimicrobial resistance. ASPs focus on preventing unnecessary antibiotic use through robust microbial surveillance, ensuring prompt and accurate diagnosis, and guiding appropriate therapy selection and duration. These programs educate prescribers on evidence-based practices and promote adherence to updated guidelines. By reducing overprescription and tailoring treatments to specific pathogens, ASPs minimise resistance development and improve patient safety. This abstract highlights the importance of ASPs in ensuring effective, judicious antibiotic use in pneumonia management and broader LRTI care.
