Abstract

Describes The Carapace, a winery in Umbria designed by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro and architects Studio Pedrotti. The dome shape, supported by wood arches, echoes the hilly landscape, and the stepped panels of the roof, galvanised with copper, reference the lines of vines and furrows in the soil. The complex includes a visitor area and underground cellar, and a sculptural 18 metre high arrow-shaped red fibreglass stela acts as a landmark in the expanse of the vineyard.
