Abstract

The Erasmus+ funded OP4RE project (2016-2019) is in the initial stages of its 3 year cross-European project timescale. Its aim is to contribute to the funders’ priority of supporting ‘open and innovative education’ in Higher Education. Within the OP4RE consortium six HEIs from the UK, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany are working together with an ICT provider (ProctorExam) and an Innovation for education advisory company (RISBO, Rotterdam) in order to propose protocols and guidelines for secure online proctoring and online assessment.
There has been a marked increase of interest globally in the potential for online education to meet the needs of a student population which may not live in close proximity to the campus provision for their chosen course/programme. Furthermore, students who follow a course online need to be assured that their assessments are, as far as possible, on a par with those taken in a traditional examination environment with invigilators in attendance. Secure and reliable provision for remote assessment as outlined by Ullah Xiao and Barker (2016) and the potential legal requirements which need to be in place when using live proctoring for examinations is the core of the research investigated by the project partners. The student experience also needs to be paramount in the use of online proctoring to make it viable (Lilley, Meere and Barker, 2016)
