Abstract

LUCASS is a process-based crop growth model for short rotation coppice (SRC) willow calibrated in two locations with and without water stress. The hydrological model was based on the ISBA approach and simulated soil water content (SWC) in the root zone. Simulated and observed SWC at Rothamsted Research were used to validate the soil water uptake for four willow genotypes used in a field trial established in 2009. A re-calibration of the capacitance probe was needed in June 2013 to adjust the extreme SWC values in the beginning of the seasons. LUCASS accurately simulated the water dynamics for all the genotypes and was able to distinguish the difference in water uptake between narrow- and broad-leaved varieties.
