Abstract
Connection design is a main aspect of steel construction, especially when tubular members are considered. Welding technology is widely applied when tubular trussed girders are considered, which means shop welding combined with flange bolting solution to assembly parts of the structure during its erection. The present investigation aimed at developing an innovative bolted connection addressed to steel RHS beam-to-column, in such a way to produce (i) rigid moment-rotation response, (ii) adequately designing bolts distribution, (iii) adopting internal cleat plates and, finally, (iv) producing aesthetical improvement of the RHS joint. Four cruciform tests were performed under static non- reversible bending moment, with two bolting conditions: (i) non-friction type and (ii) with friction connection. The experimental results showed that (i) friction type connection is able to develop rigid elastic moment-rotation response up to acceptable applied load, (ii) the proposed geometry for design is able to assure appropriate bending moment transmission between beam and column members and (iii) additional experimental investigation under reversal moments should be considered.
