Abstract

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a grave global health issue, responsible for over 1.2 million deaths in 2019, with projections indicating 10 million annual deaths by 2050. Recognised by the WHO as a significant public health threat, AMR has been worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study explores the use of storytelling in antimicrobial research to raise public awareness and foster engagement. By conducting a systematic literature review, a retrospective cross-sectional review, and a prospective survey of healthcare professionals, the research assessed antibiotic prescribing behaviours and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) practices in the UK. Employing storytelling techniques, including visual and audio elements, the study promoted multidisciplinary collaboration, enhanced healthcare professional knowledge, and increased public participation. The results highlight the effectiveness of storytelling as a research tool in AMR, providing actionable insights and advancing AMS strategies. This innovative approach underscores the potential of storytelling to drive successful outcomes in combating AMR.
