Abstract
Systems of Romance - Algorithmic and participatory sculpture and video by Simeon Nelson.
10 July to 11 August – Opening night 13 July, 6pm; Gallery 1
KickArts, in partnership with James Cook University (JCU) and Ryan Renshaw Gallery, and with the support of Perpetual Trustees, hosts Australian-raised, UK-based sculptor, new media artist and academic Simeon Nelson as an international Artist In Residence from 29 June to 19 July.
Nelson will present HD video works in the Gallery 1 Void space, as well as geometric sculptural works from his Paratekton series and flat pack series in the main body of the gallery. JCU students will have the option of assisting Nelson and the KickArts program team to install the exhibition and create site-specific wall drawings with the artist. Nelson will then deliver a one week Winter School unit at JCU, followed by public programming activities including an artist’s talk about the exhibition and his practice, an artist’s talk for senior school students, and a further talk dedicated to public art in the contemporary context.
In support of the five-week exhibition in Gallery 1, Nelson will also partner with Russell Milledge of JCU and Bonemap on a series of architectural projections around the Cairns CBD.
