Abstract

From the outside, the image of contemporary Abkhazia is often reflected through the dramatic ruins caused by war and exodus. This You Must Remember is a counter narrative, drawing from the personal recollections of those who remain, who knew those ruins as homes, as schools, as places of work and leisure. Their memories are reworked into narrative scripts and retold by them through voice and performance. Each rendition then interleaved with historical footage and imagery of the place as it looks today. What emerges is an alternative form of documentary exploring notions of fragmented memory and psychological truth - a close-looking narrative that unfurls the traumatic process of ruination and the notion that any society's stability is an enduring condition.

This You Must Remember forms part of an extensive body of practice-led research by Jury underpinned by her term ‘suspended trauma' to frame the psychological state created when individuals or communities are unable to make a traumatic event part of their narrative. Jury has been working to create a new visual language using affect as it is embodied in moving image and sonic language (with Rob Godman), to describe the form, and process of this type of cognitive stasis.
