Abstract
Translating Research into Impact: Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) at the Heart of Policy. This written evidence (AR0005), submitted to the UK Parliament Health and Social Care Committee’s inquiry on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), demonstrates the real-world impact of research in shaping national health policy. It underscores the urgency of embedding antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) across healthcare, agricultural, and environmental systems under a One Health framework. Drawing on research conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the submission illustrates how AMS efforts were disrupted and provides actionable, policy-facing recommendations to build resilience. Key proposals include strengthening AMS governance and cross-sector collaboration, integrating AMR into national risk planning, enhancing real-time surveillance capabilities, and leveraging digital tools for remote stewardship. The submission also calls for greater public and professional engagement, structured education and training programmes, and sustained investment in research and innovation. By translating academic evidence into practical strategies, this submission supports safeguarding the long-term effectiveness of antibiotics and reinforces the UK’s preparedness for future global health emergencies.
