Abstract

Eating disorders in children and young people are ever increasing and yet the knowledge, research and training provided on this subject have remained stagnant. There is a need to raise awareness and knowledge of eating disorders so that nurses can offer appropriate care tailored to this specific complex group of conditions. This article will highlight the lack of addressment towards eating disorders and the current, national influences that contribute to an increased risk of eating disorders in young people, such as social media and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. It will also explore how the role of the nurse, most specifically the school nurse, can positively impact the approach towards the treatment of eating disorders to raise public awareness and nursing knowledge.
