Dr Hannan Xiao (BEng, MEng, PhD, SFHEA)


Dr Hannan Xiao is a visiting research fellow with the Department of Computer Science. She received her PhD in Electrical & Computer Engineering from the National University of Singapore in 2003, and BEng and MEng degrees in Electronics & Information System Engineering, from the Huazhong University of Science & Technology, China.

Dr Xiao has been actively involved in research and development in the areas of computer networks and cyber security. She proposed and developed one of the first Quality of Service models for mobile ad hoc networks (FQMM). The model has 500+ citations and has been used in several textbooks in computer networks. Recently, Dr Xiao’s research projects are in IoT and 5G security. 

Dr Xiao has been the Programme Leader of the Modular Masters Programme in Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire, which has six MSc award titles featuring taught modules and dissertations in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Networks, Cyber Security, Data Analytics, Digital Forensics, Software Engineering, Advanced Computer Science, and Crossover Computer Science. Dr Xiao has conducted research in usability and security of distance learning and published in journals such as Education and Information Technologies. Dr Xiao has been recognised as Senior Fellow of Higher Education Academy (SFHEA) for her experience and achievement in Learning and Teaching.
