This book gives a comprehensive account of the fundamental aspects of genetics. Emphasis is placed on the practical issues in genetics. An outline of this book divided in two parts: In part one I begin with a series of chapters. These chapters summarize the history of genetics and the development of genetics, basic concepts in genetics, the cell and its component in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. cellular reproduction, the cell cycle and mitosis, sexual reproduction and genetic variation, Meiosis in the life cycle of bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts, plants and animals. Then in the last chapter of this part, I summarized the Chemical nature of the gene, genome and chromosomes, nucleic acids, genetic systems, bacterial and viral genetic materials.
In part two I concentrated on the formal genetics which classified in many chapters commenced by the Mendelian traits, segregation of mendelian traits, independent distribution of two different traits, phenotype and genotype, segregation of parental genotypes, monogenic inheritance, dominance relations and multiple alleles in diploid organisms, multiple alleles, genes interaction and lethality, epistasis, pleiotropism, additive genes, genes modifiers, segregation analysis with linked genetic markers, linkage analysis, quantitative differences in genetics traits, analysing pedigrees including X-linked recessive traits, X-linked dominant traits, Y-linked traits, linkage and recombination, estimate genetic distance between two genes, crossing over with linked genes calculation of recombination frequency, coupling and repulsion, the physical basis of recombination predicting the outcome of crosses with linked genes, testing for independent assortment, gene mapping with recombination frequenting, constructing a genetic map with two-point testcrosses, linkage and recombination between three genes, physical chromosome mapping, the genetics of organelle-encoded traits, extranuclear inheritance, male sterility, cytoplasmic male sterility, mitochondrial DNA, Chloroplast DNA, the intergenomic exchange of genetic information.


The author is a research fellow in the School of Life and Medical Sciences at the University of Hertfordshire, England, UK. He has a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology and Plant Biotechnology. He has worked and developed his carrier in the International Centre for Agriculture Research in Dry Areas (ICARDA) from 1986-2005. Thereafter, he moved to Aleppo University in Syria to establish and headed the Biotechnology Engineering Department from 2005-2008, in the same time he established the Molecular Biology and Biotechnology Laboratory which he has headed and supervised it from 2006-2016 and he has served as Senior Lecturer and Assistant Professor at Aleppo University during the period between 2005-2016. Furthermore, he was a Vice-Director of the Biotechnology Centre at Aleppo University from 2014-2016 before moving to Scotland for working as a Researcher at the Institute of Molecular, Cell, and System Biology at the University of Glasgow from 2016-2018. The author’s field of research covers the molecular biology and crops breeding biotechnology including marker-assisted selection for fungal diseases in crops, linkage mapping, and Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) mapping and genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9.
