What can we do with a Shakespeare play? We can edit it; historicise it; interpret it; produce it; or adapt or appropriate it. This taxonomy gives us five types of practitioner. The scholarly editor; the literary historian; the critic; the producer; and the adaptor/appropriator. The fields overlap, of course, and each practitioner will borrow from the others. But they tend to think of what they’re doing with Hamlet as distinct from what the others are doing: as individual, different, unique. Are they?
